Challenge
Coastal Cities are highly productive but at the same time most vulnerable to climate change. As they support several economic activities from fishing, urbanization to real estate, etc, it results in increasing pressure on coastal communities.
What´s the problem?
Coastal communities are under threat; as cities expand, they place extreme strain on the coastal ecology, affecting vulnerable communities such as fishermen. Climate change, overfishing, pollution, urbanisation, and a lack of governance have all wreaked havoc on the environment and the economy. Today, more than 30% of vulnerable coastal communities are under threat; we cannot move forward unless we help them, as it is generally these indigenous communities that know the most about how to preserve and recover from the damage done.

At Redefining the Edge, we recognise the significance of these communities and the role they play in maintaining ecosystem balance. Many coastal developing countries have experienced significant loss of their ecology, such as mangroves, and are increasingly vulnerable to floods as sea levels rise and the frequency of extreme weather events, such as cyclones, increases. Working with experts and local communities, we will change this through our adaptive modular systems, which will not only aid in ecological restoration but also instil a sense of responsibility in the citizens of these coastal communities, as well as aid in economic regeneration for communities such as fishermen.
